Use the official source first

SARS has published a self-service WhatsApp channel for tax advice and certain personal income tax queries, including return refund status. The safe starting point is the SARS source page, not a number copied from a forum, comment, advert, or social-media post.

According to SARS guidance, the WhatsApp interaction starts with a simple greeting and then a service menu. SARS also says authentication may require the mobile number registered on SARS systems. That is why you should use the official channel directly and not a third-party website.

Safe WhatsApp checklist

1. Open the SARS WhatsApp source link from sars.gov.za.
2. Confirm the current number and instructions.
3. Save or open the SARS WhatsApp route directly from the official source.
4. Choose the refund-status option inside the official menu.
5. Stop if the chat asks for anything that does not match SARS guidance.

This website does not collect your ID number, tax reference number, registered cellphone number, or WhatsApp messages.

What WhatsApp can and cannot do

The WhatsApp channel can help with a status request, but it does not make the refund faster. If the status shows verification, audit, banking details, debt, or outstanding returns, you may still need to use another SARS route to respond.

If you need to upload documents, update details, or review an assessment, use the official SARS system that SARS tells you to use.

Avoid fake refund chats

Refund scams often imitate official tone and urgency. Be careful of chats that send refund links, ask for bank-card details, request an eFiling password, or demand a release fee. The correct channel should be confirmed from SARS before you share any personal information.
